Set the Example
How have you been a Christian Witness this week?
Matthew 28: 18-20 says, “Then Jesus came to them and said, ‘All authority in heaven and on Earth has been given to me. Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely, I am with you always, to the very end of the age.’”
The vision of Northwest Christian Academy is to train up Christian thinkers, communicators, and servant-leaders. The Student Leadership Institute (SLi) at NCA exists to fulfill this vision by preparing young men and women to engage culture through the development of a Biblical worldview and the nurturing of leadership traits.
The focus for this week is on being a Christian Witness. A Christian Witness is someone who imitates the life of Christ. This includes displaying the traits of Christ such as kindness and compassion, and leading others on the path of Christ. A Christian Witness is not only someone who follows Christ, but provides an example for others to follow. A few main points on Christian Witness are to be patient, be forgiving, and to lead people to Christ.
A Christian Witness’ responsibility is to maintain a calm and patient personality. It can be easy to let emotions get the better of you. For example, if something does not go your way, or if something seems unfair, it is understandable if you angry or upset. However, it would be better to remain composed rather than get angry. Being a Christian Witness would be to have patience throughout the situation, as to not make it escalate or worsen.
Next, Christian Witnesses should be forgiving towards others. It is important to understand that people make mistakes. Holding a grudge against them would not be helpful for anyone. It would only make you angrier and bitter keeping the resentment inside. The sooner you forgive that person, the sooner the two of you could reconcile. Even if the other person is not sorry, it is still healthy to show forgiveness. Forgiving them not only allows you to let go of hatred, but to also set an example for how to act. If you can forgive others, regardless of how the other person feels, it can provide them with an example for how to forgive.
Finally, leading others to Christ is a prime of example of being a Christian Witness. When Jesus came to the world, he taught the word of God so that people could enter Heaven. Christian Witnesses should follow Jesus’s example and lead people towards Christ. Informing people about Christ is one of the best things you could do for them, since that could be the point where they get to know God.
To summarize, being a Christian Witness is about looking to Christ as an example for how to act. Christian Witnesses follow Christ and strive to do the right thing so that they, too, could become examples. To begin living as a Christian Witness, my challenge is to try and catch yourself when you are going against the model. It will be hard to change the way you act overnight, so to start, focus on stopping the negative behavior first. You can do this by stopping yourself before you get too upset towards someone, for instance.
Some discussion questions are, “What are some ways you can live as a Christian Witness?” and “Who is an example of a Christian Witness in your life?”
Dear God, I pray that you give us the strength to live as Christian Witnesses. Forgiveness can be difficult to accomplish, but I ask that you enable us to become an example. I pray that we not harbor hatred and anger, but rather talk about it to maintain our composure. Lastly, I pray that we meet someone who is searching for Christ, so that we may lead them on that path. In Jesus’s name, Amen.
