Be Sapp Strong

I was so moved by the tributes at the Memorial Service for Coach Henry Sapp this past Saturday. For those who were in attendance, there was a consistent theme of selflessness, servitude, and family-centered focus expressed. It is my opinion that the visible presence of so many in the auditorium, ranging from students to former staff members, and of course, the faithful members of Northwest Baptist Church, provided the most glowing of tributes.

Mrs. Heraux’s tribute, which I am sure that most would agree, was the most thorough and comprehensive portrait of Coach Sapp, characterizing him as the true example of a servant-leader.

Upon learning of the passing of Coach Sapp, just days prior to Homecoming, two of our staff members quickly put their minds to work to think of an appropriate tribute to summarize the life of such a giant of the faith. “SAPP STRONG” is what emerged! I loved it immediately!

This simple two-word statement speaks not only to Henry Sapp himself, but to his family and what we all should strive to be. Of course, I bore witness to this day-in and day-out, and it is truly manifested in the legacy he has left in his kids. I don’t think there is enough that can be said about the type of man he was, but I want to offer my own tribute and express what I think it means to BE SAPP STRONG!!!

S - Servant Leader - “Don’t expect of others what you are not willing to do yourself.”

A - Available - “Talent isn’t worth much if it doesn’t consistently show up when it is needed.”

P - Persistent - “Don’t keep working until you are tired, but until the job is done.”

P - Patient - “Sometimes people don’t show up, the resources are thin, or things don’t go according to plan; but don’t fret. With God’s help, things will work themselves out.”

To me, this is what it means to BE SAPP STRONG!!!
